Recent images taken showed Ford testing one of its new pickups. It looked like the F-150, no doubt, but what’s interesting is the print on the pickup’s fuel-filler cap. It had “Diesel” written around the rim. This put all rumours to rest, and it can rightly be said that Ford may soon launch its new 2017 Ford F-150 Diesel.
So, why did Ford decide to take a step in the diesel world? It’s because RAM 1500 EcoDiesel is taking away Ford’s market. This is the only section, combined with its EPA figures, where they are still behind. RAM promises an EPA of 29 mpg with its diesel pickup. GMC Sierra is also not far behind. A diesel engine is Ford’s answer to all this.
2017 Ford F-150 Diesel – Body Styles Changes and other Options
The rumours are already on air stating that Ford might just have hit the 28 mpg mark. The test model was heavily camouflaged, but it is no rocket science to expect an aerodynamic design under those sheets. The 2017 Ford F-150 Diesel may now sport smoother and curvier edges along with prominent wheel arches. Also, the roofline may droop a bit to ease air flow.
This tells Ford’s pickup fans that engine is not the only section where Ford looks to lift its face. The 2017 F-150 Diesel may go Super-Duty look-wise only. Expect an F-350 style front fascia with square headlights and intimidating grilles. The 2017 Ford F-150 Diesel will lift its nose to house the bigger engine, so enlarged bumpers and larger air vents are likely.
Rest will remain the same. Ford may not bring about any stark changes in the interior cabin. Steering will be telescopic, but power or manual shift will depend on the trims Ford provides. However, rumours say that the overall dimension may increase a bit. Ford is imparting changes in its new F-150’s body, so this is a possibility. For instance, larger rear arches will increase the cargo bed volume to a considerable extent.
No change in technology. The dashboard will continue to house an 8-inch display. Instrument cluster may still be gauge type. However, the Ford F-150 Diesel 2017 may sell an LCD here as an option. Safety features will be the regular ones. These include cruise control, traction control, park assist and others. Ford provides Blind Spot monitoring as an extra package in its King Ranch, the 2017 Ford F-150 Diesel may also carry similar add-ons.
2017 Ford F-150 Diesel – Modification under the Hood
Under the hood, Ford will place a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine. This V6 will deliver an output power of 254 hp and a torque of around 440 lb-ft. Not a huge improvement in the power department, but definitely a huge boost when it comes to torque. So, expect the top speed of 2017 Ford F-150 Diesel to cross the 100 mph mark with towing capacity remaining at 21,000 pounds.
The transmission will be 10-speed automatic. This might be the only powertrain that will be offered by Ford, unlike its gasoline siblings. There, fans will have a choice among a 3.5-liter V6, a 5.0-liter V8 and a 2.7-liter EcoBoost. But the step taken by Ford to the diesel section is not focused on selling trims; it’s about taking on RAM’s EPA.
